What Are Some Effective Methods to Correct Bad Posture

Author: Sutapa Sarkar

“Bad posture is increasingly becoming a problem for more and more people today. One explanation for it may be the fact that so many people are hunched over computers all the time. They work in front of a computer, and they also spend leisure time in front of a computer as they visit social networking sites or play PC games. Bad computer posture can
lead to back pains, the most common effect of bad posture in general. To remedy the situation, one can make a conscious effort to sit straight when working at the computer, get the best office chair that promotes good posture, and if back pain is experienced, try out yoga, stretching and back pain exercises.

Below are more tips on how to have proper computer posture:

• Get an ergonomic chair with an adjustable backrest and firm padding. This is the best kind of computer office chair. The backrest should be snug against your back, and slightly curved in such a way as to adapt to the natural inward curve of your lumbar spine. Sit properly so that your back makes contact with the backrest. Do not sit with your legs crossed.

• If you are hunched over while working on your computer, try adjusting the level of the
monitor. In many cases, the monitor is placed too low. On the other hand, if it is too high, you will crane your neck, and that’s not good either. The ideal is to have the top of the monitor at eye level.

• Always make a conscious effort to check your sitting posture, and correct it if needed. It is easy to forget how you’re sitting when you are engrossed on something on the screen.

Aside from being conscious about having good computer posture, be conscious of your
posture too while standing, walking and sitting elsewhere. Whenever you sit down, pretend you are sitting on a “posture chair” where you should have your back straight. Make a mental note to correct yourself whenever you slouch. Bad posture is often due to the habit of how you carry yourself, and it will take a while before you can undo that habit. To unlearn it, replace it with the new habit of always checking your posture and adjusting it as needed.

How to improve posture requires that you know what good posture is. Good posture means standing with the spine straight, not rigidly so but more or less relaxed. Your shoulders should be rolled back, your two feet should be evenly planted on the floor, and your chin should be parallel to the floor. Your whole stance shouldn’t feel rigid or uncomfortable.

For people who already are experiencing back pain, conscious posture correction may not be enough. What they can do is to consult a physician, especially if the pain becomes severe. Your doctor can recommend exercises to correct your posture. Hopefully, he won’t have to recommend braces or even surgery, which is a last-resort option for serious back
problems and spinal abnormalities. If you are so inclined, you can also consult experts in alternative medicine. A chiropractor can relieve your back pain as well as teach you good posture exercises. A yoga instructor can teach you the specific postures of yoga for back pain.

Good posture tips also include having a firm mattress to sleep on at night. People spend hours asleep, and when they frequently do so in an awkward posture because of a mattress that’s too soft, it can defeat all their daytime efforts to maintain good posture.”

What Is A Subluxation?

Author: diaz red

While there is much debate within the chiropractic profession as to the effects of subluxations, the majority of the profession does agree to what a subluxation actually is.

The definition of a subluxation is: an incorrect movement or a position of bones within  the spine, resulting in abnormal and detrimental nerve pressure. A mechanical strain that results in wear and tear of other spinal muscles ligaments take place due to improper functioning of a vertebra. The other subsequent painful conditions caused due to subluxation are severe pain, tenderness of muscles, decreased mobility of spine, numbness in the extremities and inflammation. These all abnormal conditions are sufficient reasons that might require you to visit a doctor or a Chiropractor.

Subluxation can cause adverse effects to the functioning of nerves and may also result in the decreased communication within the nervous system; thanks to the direct relationship between the nerve roots and spine. This is why it is very important to eliminate subluxations in order to avoid its negative impacts on overall health.

Causes of Subluxation

Primarily subluxations occur due to the following reasons:

Physical Causes
These causes are responsible for causing acute trauma that hinder repetitive motion and affect the spine badly. These physical causes might even be the physical positions we are accustomed to and have never thought about. They may include accidents, incorrect postures, wrong sitting position, and lack of ergonomics, improper lifting, repetitive motions and workstation habits.

Emotional Causes
They are generally the conditions of stress due to extreme emotional conditions. It generally includes overwhelming emotions like stress, anger, sadness and fear. Excessive emotional conditions and lack of stress management have significant effect on the functioning of the immune system of body that also result in several kinds of physical problems including subluxation.

Chemical Causes
These are the causes that involve effect of chemical intake of our body. Generally the chemical intake refers to diet, nutritional components, drugs, pollution, smoking, alcohol or chemical toxic agents present in food , air or water. Many chemicals that are not good for human body are likely to decrease immunity of body and reduce capability of body to tolerate stress of any kind. This might eventually result in spinal subluxation.

Treatment for Subluxation
Sometimes subluxation can be cured by virtue of natural abilities of human body to fight abnormalities. Human body has the natural tendency to resist all the negativities that are troubling. However, a severe subluxation may not be cured automatically and the patient may need to visit a chiropractor.

A chiropractor treats the patients of subluxation by locating the proper spinal vertebra by making certain adjustment. These adjustments are made quickly but with gentle and corrective force. This corrective force allows the immovable or incorrectly moving spinal joints to attain a normal motion. This simply depend on the chiropractor’s decision which method of applying corrective force should be used for the treatment of subluxation. Many times more than one adjustment is required for a complete treatment for subluxation.

Chiropractors are the only health care profession that concentrates on locating and correct spinal subluxations. The reason chiropractic treatment gets such positive results is the chiropractors ability to correct these subluxations and restore proper function to the spine.

The phrase chiropractic stems from two Greek phrases – cherios (hand) plus pracktos(completed by). In essence, chiropractic treatment is definitely “done by hand”.
Intended for optimum wellbeing, our spine must be in right alignment, devoid of abnormal function or construction. A lot of people are born with irregular spinal construction. By preserving our spine in proper alignment, working with hands-on spinal adjustments, the hands-on care compensates for the purpose of birth defects.

As intended for incorrect spinal alignment, a “directional thrust” in addition to strain to your misaligned spinal segment is definitely applied, by moving the vertebra into its suitable placement. 11.5 Myths About Chiropractic Exposed

1. Chiropractic Doesn’t Work

Chiropractic is like all health disciplines. It works for some problems and doesn’t work for other problems. For musculoskeletal problems (like back pain, neck pain, headaches, migraines, fibromyalgia, sciatica, carpal tunnel syndrome, herniated discs, auto accident injuries, work comp injuries, and sports injuries) chiropractic works exceptionally well. In fact, in many instances people find better results with chiropractic than with drugs or surgery!

2. Chiropractic Isn’t Scientific

Chiropractic has an enormous amount of peer reviewed research showing that it is safe and effective for chronic problems involving the nervous system and the musculoskeletal system. There have been over 50 random controlled, double blind trials showing chiropractic is more effective than drugs & surgery for the management of back pain. A recent study at Duke University showed chiropractic was more effective than drugs for headaches & migraines. Researchers in San Diego showed chiropractic to be more effective than medicine or physical therapy for injuries associated with whiplash trauma during a car accident. People suffering with back pain, neck pain, headaches, migraines, sciatica, sports injuries, herniated discs, and extremity problems can rest assured that the chiropractic care they are receiving is backed up by rigorous scientific research.

3. Chiropractic Is Dangerous

For years, the medical community has attempted to portray chiropractic as a dangerous therapy, particularly when involving manipulation to the cervical (neck) area of the spine. However, none of these medical opinions are based in scientific fact. In fact, there have been numerous studies which explored the overall risk of spinal manipulation. These studies (which were published in peer refereed scientific index medicus journals) show the rate of an adverse reaction following a chiropractic adjustment to be roughly 1 in 3,000,000. Now for purposes of comparison, you have 100 TIMES greater likelihood of being injured from taking a Motrin™. Chiropractors pay the lowest malpractice premiums of any physician. Why is this? Because according to the insurance industry, chiropractors don’t injure or kill people. It literally is the safest form of healthcare known to human kind.

4. Once You Go, You Have To Keep Going Back Forever

You don’t have to go back forever. You don’t have to do anything. For example, you don’t have to eat right and exercise. You don’t have to brush & floss your teeth. You don’t have to get to bed on time and get a good 8 hours of sleep each night. We do certain things because it makes sense to do them. We see benefits in keeping up with maintaining our health.

While you don’t have to go to a chiropractor forever, some people opt to continue on a periodic maintenance basis so they can keep their joints moving well and maintain good posture. It’s kind of like going to the dentist for periodic check ups and cleanings. The spine is just like everything else (your teeth, your car, your house, etc..) in that it requires periodic maintenance for optimum function. People go to their primary care doctors indefinitely. Women go to the gynecologist for an examination. These things are done for wellness & prevention measures. The same thing applies to your spine with chiropractic care.

5. Chiropractors Aren’t “Real Doctors”

The word “Doctor” is latin for “teacher” or “learned one”. It doesn’t mean “he who prescribes drugs. There are many different types of doctoral degree programs: D.C., M.D., D.O., O.D., D.V.M., D.M.D., Ph.D., Ed.D, D.P.T., etc. A professional or academic doctorate degree is considered to be the highest degree conferred in any given area of study.

6. I Can Crack My Own Back

While you may be able to “crack” the joints in your back, you are merely doing a non-specific manipulation of your spine. A chiropractor doesn’t do that. Chiropractors perform very specific corrections by moving the vertebrae to their “normal” position. This is like if you knock your front end of your car’s suspension out of alignment. You go to the auto shop and the mechanic loosens the suspension. Then they put a laser down the long axis of the car and move the camber and tow back and forth until the front end is re-aligned and then re-tighten everything back up. They aren’t just wiggling it back and forth carelessly. A chiropractic adjustment works along the same principals. The chiropractor locates the vertebrae that is out of alignment. Then utilizing very specific vectors, he/she gently slips the bone back into place.

7. Neck Adjustments Cause Strokes

Certain people in the medical community (who have a negative bias against chiropractic and seek to sling mud against the profession) are trying to convince the world that chiropractors cause strokes. Again, there is no scientific study which proves this claim. Not one. And yet the medical community continues to frighten the patient population with this myth. It’s unscientific and dishonest of them to perpetuate this lie.

8. Chiropractic Is Only Good For Back Pain

While chiropractic has an outstanding track record for helping people get rid of back pain, that is not the only condition that can be treated. Literally any problem that has to do with the nervous system, or the musculoskeletal system can be helped with chiropractic care.

9. Kids Don’t Need Chiropractic

Most chronic spinal problems adults have started when they were children. As the twig is bent, so grows the tree. Wouldn’t it make sense to nip these problems in the bud before they’ve had a chance to blossom into a full blown crisis? Wouldn’t it make sense for a chiropractor to treat young girls to first start to show signs of scoliosis? Kids have spines too – and they most certainly need chiropractic care.

10. Medical Doctors Hate Chiropractors

The medical community has certainly softened their stance with regard to chiropractic and their treatment toward chiropractors. Unfortunately there are still a couple of old timers who are set in their ways. There is still professional bigotry out there. But for the most part, the younger doctors don’t hate chiropractors. They view them as a medical sub-specialty (which is exactly what it is). The continuous expansion of the scientific literature (which proves chiropractic works) has certainly changed attitudes.

11. Chiropractic Is Too Expensive

Chiropractic is not only safer and more effective than drugs & surgery for chronic problems, it is less expensive too! When you consider that spinal surgery costs an average of $50,000.00 – and fails 50% of the time, chiropractic seems like a bargain at 10 times the price. Also, when you take into consideration the amount of damage that drugs cause to your liver and kidneys – and the long-term costs of the damage to those organs, again chiropractic is a better deal.

11.5. I Need Permission From My M.D. Before Seeing A Chiropractor

You don’t need permission to go see a chiropractor. In today’s day and age, you can go see any health care provider you want. If your medical doctor tells you you can’t go, find another doctor you can STILL go. You are the health care consumer. It’s your body and your money. You can go to anyone you want. 09 South Park Rd. Top 8 Frequently Asked Questions About Chiropractic

Does it hurt?

What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a natural healing science, art and philosophy primarily concerned with detecting and then eliminating interference to your nervous system. Since your nervous system controls every aspect of your body, chiropractic can have a major impact on multiple areas of your health. Founded in 1895, it is the world’s largest drug-free healthcare system and the 3rd largest primary healthcare system in the USA behind medicine and dentistry. Over 25 million Americans will see their chiropractor this year.

Does it really work and how?

Yes Virginia, chiropractic is the real deal! Chiropractic is firmly grounded in science and has an ever-growing body of research showing it to be safe, effective, comfortable and affordable. The latest estimates show that over 85% of Olympic athletes utilize chiropractic care to enhance performance and stay healthy as do most professional athletes. No question that it works!

Chiropractic is based on the fact that every structure and function of your body is controlled by the nervous system. If there is interference to the nervous system, then whatever body part or function that nerve was controlling will stop working at 100%.

For example, if a person suffers a pinched (irritated) bundle of nerves in their lower back they frequently experience back pain and muscle spasms. What most people do not realize is that the nerves in the low back not only control the muscles but other organs as well including the colon, bladder and reproductive organs. Irritation to the same nerve bundle can, in addition to muscle spasms, cause symptoms such as constipation, diarrhea, bladder control issues and menstrual cycle problems. What surprises many is that a person with a pinched nerve bundle in their low back may have the other symptoms but no pain and no muscle spasms! Only about 10% of your nervous system tells you about pain so you can have a problem in 90% of your nervous system and NO PAIN.

Chiropractors focus on the spine because this is where the delicate nerves are most likely to be compressed or irritated as they pass through on their way to control all parts of your body.

The majority of spinal problems arise from physical, mechanical stress to your body such as accidents, injuries, prolonged sitting etc.. These stresses and injuries result in stiff immovable joints which in turn cause surrounding joints to become overworked, loose and eventually damaged. The treatment to correct these problems also has to be physical and mechanical in nature.

It is crazy to think that taking a drug is going to loosen up a stiff, damaged spinal joint. The drug may cover up the pain and symptoms but will do nothing to correct the physical cause of the pain. In fact taking drugs over time will allow the joint to become more and more permanently damaged.

Chiropractors employ many gently methods of physically restoring the normal motion and function to your spine which reduces nerve interference and allows your body to heal itself. These treatments are called spinal adjustments and are typically, not only pain-fee, but an enjoyable experience.

Is Chiropractic Safe?

Yes, chiropractic care is exceptionally safe! The minuscule risks of chiropractic care have been greatly exaggerated by our competition in order to scare you away from the safest form of healthcare and back to medicine, the most dangerous form. Chiropractic has a better safety record than any drug, even baby aspirin and Tylenol! Medical treatment has become the 3rd leading cause of death in the USA, right behind heart disease and cancer, killing hundreds of thousands of Americans every year.

An interesting statistic is that you are more likely to be killed by being struck by lightning than killed by a vending machine and you are more likely to be killed a vending machine than by a shark and more likely to be killed by a shark than by a chiropractor!

Now knowing how safe, conservative and effective chiropractic care is, doesn’t it make sense to you to start with chiropractic first and then if you don’t get well go on to more radical and dangerous forms of care like drugs and surgery? We are a backward society that often starts with the most invasive dangerous treatments first and then sees the chiropractor afterward as a last resort. Insanity.

Please help us permanently dispel this myth about chiropractic care being risky. Educate your friends and family. Spread the word and save a life!

At what age should a person have a chiropractic check-up?

Chiropractic care has fantastic benefits for all ages and ideally a person should have their first check-up shortly after birth.

I know what you may be thinking, “Infant check-up!!?” Why would a brand new baby need chiropractic care? Stop for a minute and just think about what a baby goes though coming into this world. Even during a normal natural delivery there are tremendous pressures on the baby’s neck, back and pelvis of up to 90 pounds per square inch.

With modern medicine turning childbirth into a medical procedure instead of a natural process, infant trauma and injuries are sky rocketing. You see when you drug the mother, her ability to feel and push the baby out is impaired which forces the doctor to have to pull and twist the baby out from the birth canal. Babies are not designed to be pulled and stretched during delivery which is unnatural and causes injury, they are designed to be compressed and pushed out of the birth canal which is natural and much safer. This is the same reason c-section deliveries have a much higher rate of spinal injury compared to natural childbirth.

It takes just a split second for a spinal injury to occur during birth. An unexpected push from the mother, a pull at the wrong angle from the doctor, too much force from the doctor, the use of forceps or vacuum and you have a sprain or even worse injury to the baby’s spine. This injury, called a vertebral subluxation, if undetected and left untreated can plague the baby for the rest of their life, limiting them from reaching their full potential. “As the twig is bent so grows the tree!”

OK, chiropractic is safe and good for babies but what about senior citizens? I have heard the most ignorant statement repeatedly from seniors: “I know, at my age, I have arthritis so there is no point in trying to fix my spine” WRONG! WRONG! WRONG!

ALL ages can benefit from chiropractic care. Even a single chiropractic adjustment in the right circumstances has resulted in unbelievable improvement in the quality-of-life of many patients. Until you are dead, your body has an incredible ability to heal and improve. Never give up on improving your health! If your doctor ever tells you “You’ll just have to learn to live with it” he/she is actually telling you it is time to find a new doctor, one that will help keep you improving and maintaining your health and well-being for life.

Does treatment hurt?

For most people the chiropractic treatments, called spinal adjustments, are not only comfortable but are actually an enjoyable experience. All treatment is geared to each individual’s comfort level and the old “No Pain No Gain” approach is never used. It is heartwarming to see children who are so small they can’t even get up on the adjusting table by themselves, fighting with their siblings to be the FIRST one adjusted. Pediatricians would be green with envy to see how even the smallest kids are happy to be in the chiropractic office and how they love to get adjusted.

Does my insurance cover Chiropractic?

Although most insurance policies have some coverage, the reality is that in most cases it is very limited and so highly managed that, like most other health services, it pays for only a portion of needed care.

There is currently a prevalent form of craziness that I call “Insurance Insanity”. It has 2 main parts: Firstly many people have this notion that if they can just somehow obtain really great health insurance (which by the way no longer exists) that this in some way protects them and makes them healthy. Secondly, they think that if a service is not covered by their insurance that they really don’t need it. CRAZY! A prime example is a patient who needed about $1,200 worth of chiropractic care, who had the money but refused the necessary treatment because he felt it was too expensive. When asked if it was more cost-effective to let his spine continue degenerate to the point where he will need a $200,000 surgery which would leave him disabled for life? His straight-faced answer was “Well, my insurance will cover the cost of the surgery.” Now that my friend is just plain crazy.

When it comes to care, if you need it, you need it! Regardless of if it is covered, regardless of if you can “afford” it and regardless of if you want it! If you need it, you need it.

A much better question to ask is “What is the best value for my healthcare dollar?”. Investing your money is all about value not amount. For example, I believe that a dollar wasted is too much but spending a half of a million dollars to buy a one million dollar house is an extraordinary deal.

The truth that any patient with a severely degenerated spine would gladly sign over the deed to their million dollar house, to the doctor, if he could restore their health. The sad fact is that once damaged, there is no cure. There are no spine and nervous system replacements and it is very unlikely there ever will be. What is absolutely tragic is that this type of degeneration is almost 100% preventable with regular check-ups and proper chiropractic maintenance.

Chiropractic is an exceptional value for your healthcare dollar. If you need it, the benefits you receive from chiropractic are incalculable compared to the amount of money spent! In fact they are priceless.

How much time does a chiropractic visit take?

For your first visit, allow 45 minutes to 1 hour. On this visit you will need to complete some obligatory health forms, you will have a chance to sit down and consult with the doctor to review your symptoms, history, lifestyle and your health goals.

The next step is a chiropractic physical examination, some very high-tech nervous system scans, possibly an x-ray study and finally, if you are in pain, some first aid care and home instructions.

Typically on the second visit allow 30 to 45 minutes. On this visit you will receive your doctor’s report of findings where he will let you know if he can help you, he will show you what is wrong and why, how long care will take, how much care will cost and finally he will let you know of your options for care. You will then receive your first full chiropractic adjustment (treatment).

On subsequent visits allow 10 to 20 minutes door to door. The actual treatments may only take a few minutes once your work-up is complete and you have set up your treatment plan and goals.

Once I start care do I have to go forever?

In a great practice the doctor should support all clients at the level and frequency that they choose. There should never be any pressure to do anything you are not 100% behind. You may take advantage of all the phenomenal health and wellness benefits for as long and as often as you choose. Great doctors should always respect and support the wishes of their clients.

Does my body become dependent on chiropractic care?

This question always make me smile. There is absolutely nothing about chiropractic care that makes you dependent on care. There is however something that is highly addicting about feeling really good. It is funny but once people start feeling great they tend to want to stay feeling great. Chiropractic care helps your body to function at a much higher level which feels fantastic. Chiropractic care is similar to exercise but without all the sweating. If you consistently work out, the benefit is you become physically fit which feels much better that being unfit and out of shape. Most people who are in great shape continue to work out because they like the feeling of being in shape. What happens if they stop exercising? They continue to feel good for a time but all too quickly lose their conditioning and lose the benefits of feeling great. Now I ask you is exercise addicting? Does your body become dependent on exercise? Of course not and there is also nothing about chiropractic care that makes you dependent either.

Conclusion: Safe conservative chiropractic care is an essential part of a natural wellness lifestyle. Not only will you enjoy less pain and an enhanced quality of life but you will avoid permanent damage and degeneration to your body.

7 Key Reasons To Seek Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic is a health care profession that focuses on disorders of the musculoskeletal system and the nervous system. Those that use chiropractic care regularly recommend it highly for a variety of reasons. Here are the seven best reasons to find a chiropractor when you aren’t feeling your very best.

1. Chiropractic Has Been Proven Safe

Chiropractic is one of the safest therapies available if you are suffering from any neuromusculoskeletal issues such as back, neck, joint, or head pain.

What exactly does safe mean? If you want to talk numbers, then the risk of injury is 1 in 286,000,000, or 0.0002%. Compare that to standard treatments such as medication and surgery where the risk of injury is 1 in 1428. That’s right – chiropractic manipulation is that much safer, and as you’ll learn later in this report, more effective as well.

The most common issue involving chiropractic isn’t an injury at all. It is simply some mild soreness after adjustment. Think about how your muscles feel if you’ve done something you don’t normally do. You feel sore because your muscles, bones, and ligaments have moved in ways they are not used to moving. This is what happens during a chiropractic adjustment but on a minor scale. Any soreness you feel will be gone within 24 hours and most patients feel immediately better with no soreness whatsoever.

Why is chiropractic so safe? There are four main reasons:

  1. Chiropractors have years of schooling with coursework that includes classes on all aspects of the spine.
  2. Chiropractors have been trained, doing clinical work long before becoming licensed.
  3. Chiropractors continue their education long after graduation, completing courses yearly in order to maintain a license to practice.
  4. Finally, and most importantly, a chiropractor’s basic philosophy is that the body is capable of healing itself. The purpose of a chiropractor is simply to remove the subluxations, or blockages, that occur in spine so that the body can do its job.

Chiropractic is so safe that agencies unassociated with chiropractic tout its benefits. For instance, the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research (AHCPR), part of the US Department of Health and Human Services, found that complications are rare. Not only that, they suggest that chiropractic should be used before surgery is considered. And finally, they state that prescription drugs are not recommended for most back pains.

2. Chiropractic Has Been Proven Effective for Pain
If you have pain, chiropractic may be just what you need. Studies in the United States and other parts of the world show that chiropractic manipulations are effective. One study in California found that chiropractic was effective 86% of the time for general lower back pain.

But what of acute lower back pain? A report released by the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research recommended chiropractic as the best treatment for this ailment. A study from the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and the Jefferson County (Missouri) Rehabilitation Centre showed that there was immediate improvement when chiropractic was used to treat acute low back pain.

Study after study has been conducted and study after study has concluded that spinal adjustment is superior to other treatments for acute pain. But chiropractic is beneficial to more than just general, chronic, or acute lower back pain.

Patients of chiropractic seek help for neck pain or discomfort as well. In fact, 19% of patients report neck pain at the first consultation. This pain is usually caused by accident or injury but can also be brought on by every day living.

The modern medical treatment for neck pain is either immobilization or physical therapy. However, studies have shown that spinal adjustments are more effective. For instance, a study done in the Netherlands observed patients receiving one of the three treatments. They found that spinal adjustments improved overall physical functioning more than the other treatments.

Beyond the back and neck, patients often seeks chiropractic care for headaches, including migraines. For chiropractic patients, migraines are often reduced or resolved without using pain killers or other prescription medications. A study was published by chiropractic doctors at University of Odense and the Nordic Institute of Chiropractic and clinical Biochemist in Denmark showing that spinal adjustments and soft tissue therapy allowed for steady improvement.

Many people understand the role of chiropractic in the back, neck, and head because chiropractors are seen as “back doctors.” However, chiropractic has proven effective for many other conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome, fibromyalgia, infantile colic, and much more.

For pain associated with a variety of conditions, chiropractic is proven effective, often more effective than modern medical treatments. Coupled with the safety of chiropractic, it should be your first choice when dealing with pain.

3. Chiropractic is Less Invasive and Drug Free

If you go to a medical doctor due to neck and back pain, you are likely to be given nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, known as NSAIDS. Although these drugs are given out regularly, they do have significant risks t hat are far greater than the typical issue, soreness, seen with chiropractic.

NSAID risks include:

  • Allergic reactions, some of which can be life threatening
  • Hives or rashes
  • Increased risk of heart attack
  • Increased risk of stroke
  • Gastrointestinal issues such as bleeding or ulcers
  • Cancer

Another typical treatment is bed rest. But this, too, can cause problems such as muscles atrophy, heart and lung weakness, bone loss, and blood clots.

Let’s not forget surgery. Surgery is used for neck and back pain whenever painkillers and bed rest don’t work and the risks of surgery are great. They include:

  • Breathing issues due to anesthesia – a patient can quit breathing entirely
  • Blood loss leading to transfusions
  • Cardiovascular risks such as heart attack or stroke
  • Scar tissue
  • Pain
  • Infection
  • Blood clots
  • Lung collapse
  • Injury to other areas of the body
  • Paralysis
  • Numbness and tingling of parts of the body
  • Swelling and bruising
  • And even death

Chiropractic has none of these risks because it is not invasive. There is no cutting on the body and there is no medication prescribed. To avoid the risks associated with NSAIDS and surgery, chiropractic is an excellent choice.

4. Chiropractic is Less Disruptive to Your Lifestyle

Chiropractic is done on an outpatient basis and has easy recovery, often less than 24 hours of minimal soreness. Consider this in comparison to the recovery of surgery.

After any surgical procedure, the body needs time to repair tissues damaged during the surgery so that the body can return to normal. Surgical recovery is a process that can take time, often long periods of time requiring medication and bed rest. In fact, pushing yourself too hard after surgery will cause setbacks and make your recovery time longer.

Chiropractic, on the other hand, has limited recovery time. At most, chiropractic patients may feel some mild soreness in the area of the manipulation. This soreness is typically gone in a matter of hours, not days or weeks as with surgery.

Additionally, surgical patients that are older, out of shape, overweight, or generally in poor health will take far longer to heal and be ready for every day life. Although different factors will dictate how quickly you are pain free, the ability to resume your lifestyle happens quickly with most patients, often with as little as one manipulation.

5. Chiropractic is Less Expensive

In August 1999, Blue Cross/Blue Shield (BCBS) of Kansas presented a study titled “Lumbago Treatment.” When viewed per treatment episode, chiropractic was shown to be more cost effective than anesthesiology, neurosurgery, neurology, registered physical therapy, orthopedic reconstructive surgery, physical medicine and rehabilitation, and rheumatology.

Why so cost effective? Medical doctors and physical therapists rely on:

  • Referrals
  • Prescriptions
  • Surgery
  • MRIs
  • CT scans
  • Hospitalization

Over 50% of the charges are simply for diagnostic procedures and not for actual pain relief.

On the other hand, the majority of chiropractic expense comes from office based treatment with less than 10% of costs arising from diagnostics, typically in the form of spinal x-rays.

A study in the May 2007 Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics showed that chiropractic resulted in a 60.2% reduction in hospital admissions, 59.0% reduction in hospital days, 62.0% reduction in outpatient surgeries and procedures, and 83% reduction pharmaceutical costs when compared with conventional medicine.

By reducing these items, overall costs associated with chiropractic care are significantly less than that of traditional medical care.

6. Chiropractic Helps With Injuries Due to Accidents

Chiropractic is beneficial in treating various injuries such as sprains, pulled muscles, and joint problems due to auto, sports, work, and everyday injuries. The most common injuries due to accidents are:

  • Whiplash
  • Lower back misalignment
  • Upper back and neck misalignment
  • Repetitive motion injuries

Whiplash is the sudden movement that causes distortions to the neck. This type of sudden movement often happens during a car crash, even one at very low speeds. Although you may not initially feel any pain, the vertebrae that move out of place will eventually cause problems with the nerves and cause you pain from misalignment or subluxations. Medical doctors prescribe pain meds and bed rest for whiplash, which may be good for a day or two, but not for the long run. There is no way to remain in bed indefinitely nor is it possible to function regularly on pain medications. A chiropractor will help you with the cause of the problem rather than help you manage the symptoms.

Lower back misalignment can happen suddenly or over a long period of time. For instance, you can improperly lift something heavy resulting in immediate back pain, or you can simply have poor posture that results in back pain over time. The misalignment causes subluxations that can be corrected using chiropractic.

Lower back pain is made up of several different low back problems including:

  • Vertebral subluxations
  • Injured discs
  • Muscle strain
  • Ligament sprain
  • Scoliosis
  • Sciatica
  • And more.

The ability to correct injuries holds true for the upper back and neck as well.

Repetitive Motion Injuries are a fast growing source of pain in the United States often associated with the workplace, particularly sitting at a computer terminal for long periods of time. Repetitive motion injuries cause less oxygen to get into the muscles and this causes scar tissue to develop. Chiropractic releases the subluxations causing the pain.

So, whether your pain is from a car accident or merely sitting incorrectly at work, chiropractic is a way for you to feel better fast.

7. Chiropractic: Because You Live, Move, and Breathe

Because you are alive and move about, you are sure to cause a misalignment of your spine at one time or another. Simple movements such as sitting or bending can cause problems. So can walking, running, stretching, and lifting. In fact, any movement can create a subluxation and subluxations cause pain when left alone. So, if you move, then you can benefit from chiropractic.

Whether you are out running every day or see yourself more as a couch potato, chiropractic can be beneficial to you. It is the most effective natural healthcare available. And, as you’ve learned, it is safe, effective, non-invasive, inexpensive, and great for any injuries you may have. If you live, move, or breathe, you should have a doctor of Chiropractic as a member of your personal health care team.

Pregnant Women and Chiropractic Care

Author: Jonathan Berns, DC

Chiropractic care for pregnant women is often questioned by many whether it is safe or not. The good news is yes, chiropractic care throughout pregnancy is perfectly safe if handled by a professional. In fact, there are many benefits that pregnant women can get from chiropractic care.

Why Undergo Chiropractic Care?

As the baby inside the womb develops and grows, a lot of physiological and endocrinological changes happen to the body including a growing abdomen and an increase in a woman’s back curve. Her pelvis also changes and all of these can lead to misaligned spine or joints.

Chiropractic care can help establish pelvic balance and alignment to help the body adjust to all of the changes. If the spine is aligned, delivery will be easier for the mother.

Is Chiropractic Care Safe?

Chiropractors undergo extensive training including handling pregnant women properly. Some even take specific interests such as prenatal and postnatal care.

In fact, most chiropractors know how to work with women who are pregnant or still trying to conceive. They know how to adjust the pressure appropriate for pregnant women and how to use the right techniques that are safe for them. They can also teach the right exercises and stretches that can be done by pregnant women on their own time.

What are the Benefits of Chiropractic Care?

Pregnant women can maintain a healthy pregnancy if they undergo chiropractic care. They can also learn how to control the symptoms of nausea. They may also have reduced time for labor and delivery.

As their body changes, chiropractic care can relive the back, joint or neck pain that a pregnant woman feels. Chiropractic care can also lessen a pregnant woman’s chance of undergoing a potential C-section delivery.

The Doctor’s Advice Regarding Chiropractic Care

Since chiropractic care helps develop the pelvic balance, a lot of doctors recommend undergoing chiropractic care as early as possible during pregnancy. This way, there will be less stress in the pelvic area giving a healthy environment to the baby which in turn allows the baby to position properly before delivery.

A baby is usually positioned breech during the early part of the pregnancy but as the baby grows more and more, he will find it harder to position properly when he is already 37 weeks or more. Chiropractic care early on the pregnancy balances the pelvis and gives greater chance for the baby to move into the proper position. If the baby is positioned correctly, the mother has lesser chances of suffering difficult labor.

Chiropractic Care for Lower Back Pain

Author: garywray

Lower back pain is a very disturbing symptom. Almost all of us experience it once in a while. Lower back pain needs should not be ignored because it often interferes with sleep, work, recreation and other daily activities. No wonder most Americans spend about $50 billion per year in treating low back pain, according to the National Institute of Health.

One of the most effective ways by which lower back pain can be treated is through chiropractic care. Chiropractic care uses manipulation of the spine and other manual methods. These chiropractic methods are based on the fact that the body’s musculoskeletal system will eventually heal itself through proper alignment even without surgery or medications. Chiropractic care makes use of manipulation, which restores the movements of the joints by making the body heal from joint tissue injury brought about by trauma such as repetitive stress, falls, and postural defects.Chiropractic care is often used by many people to relieve pain in the joints, muscles, bones and connective tissues. It may or may be combined with medical or surgical care. Chiropractic care is usually done by a licensed chiropractor, who has undergone an undergraduate degree plus four years of chiropractic education. Chiropractors usually attach the initials D.C. after their names.

So how does a chiropractor treat lower back pain? First a complete medical history is obtained, after which a through physical examination is done. The chiropractor may then request additional lab tests to prove his or her diagnosis.

Next the chiropractor will then explain to you his or her plan of treatment. Treatment may often involve one or more manual adjustments. In this process, the chiropractic doctor manipulations the joints using a sudden yet controlled force so that the joints will be able to restore their range of motion with less discomfort and limitation. This manipulation of the joint—also termed as adjustment—is able to move the joint beyond its usual range of motion. Some people being treated with spinal adjustment could hear a cracking or popping sound during the procedure. Don’t worry, that’s perfectly normal! This is being done so that the body will be able to restore its full physical function. In this way, pain is relieved and strength and stamina is restored.

The question now is this: is chiropractic care really effective in treating lower back pain? There are quite a number of studies which have proved that chiropractic care could effectively treat low back pain.

A Cochrane review done by Walker et al  determined the effects of combined chiropractic interventions on pain, disability, back-related function, overall improvement, and patient satisfaction in adults with lower back pain (LBP). This review examined 12 studies utilizing 2887 subjects with lower back pain. Their study revealed that combined chiropractic interventions slightly improved pain and disability in the short term and pain in the medium term for acute or sub-acute lower back pain.

Another study by McMorland et al  compared the clinical efficacy of spinal manipulation against microdiskectomy in patients with sciatica secondary to lumbar disk herniation (LDH). This study utilized 40 subjects who were screened for symptoms of unilateral lumbar radiculopathy secondary to LDH at L3-4, L4-5, or L5-S1. These subjects were then randomized to either surgical microdiskectomy or standardized chiropractic spinal manipulation for 3 months. Sixty percent of patients with sciatica who had failed other medical management benefited from spinal manipulation to the same degree as if they underwent surgical intervention. The study suggested that patients with symptomatic LDH failing medical management should consider spinal manipulation followed by surgery only if necessary.

In a study by Hoisiis et al, chiropractic adjustments were compared to muscle relaxants for sub-acute low back pain. Their findings revealed that chiropractic care was more beneficial than placebo in reducing pain and more beneficial than either placebo or muscle relaxants in reducing pain.

Chiropractic care was also proven to be effective in reducing pregnancy-associated lower back pain, according to a study by Stuber et al.  This study systematically reviewed published evidence regarding chiropractic care, including spinal manipulation, for pregnancy-related lower back pain (LBP). Results from 6 studies showed that chiropractic care is associated with improved outcomes in pregnancy-related LBP.

Chiropractic care was also studied to be effective against osteoarthritis-related lower back. According to Beyerman et al , chiropractic care combined with heat is more effective than heat alone for treating osteoarthritis-based lower back pain. Pain reduction occurs more rapidly and to a greater degree, and ROM increases more rapidly and to a greater degree.

Chiropractic care effectively reduced levels of disability and perceived pain in chronic lower back pain . In post-surgical patients, chiropractic care could effectively improve lower back pain.

Chiropractic care is also lower in cost compared to conventional medical care for low back pain. A study by Liliedahl et al determined if there were differences in the cost of low back pain care when a patient is able to choose a course of treatment with a medical doctor (MD) versus a doctor of chiropractic (DC). The results showed that costs for chiropractic care were almost 40% less than medical care. Even after risk adjusting each patient’s costs, chiropractic care was 20% less expensive than medical care.

With regards to adverse events, chiropractic care is believed to be a safe procedure. Rubinstein  wrote that chiropractic care adverse events are benign and self-limiting. To quote, “The incidence of severe complications following chiropractic care and manipulation is extremely low. The best evidence suggests that chiropractic care is a useful therapy for subjects with neck or lower back pain for which the risks of serious adverse events should be considered negligible.” Not everyone is suitable for chiropractic care, however, so that one should talk to a chiropractor first before undergoing this treatment modality for lower back pain.
