PAIN IN THE BACK?

Did you know that 80% of all Americans will experience back pain in their lifetime?

What You Should Know:
  • People with back pain are 3 times more likely to be inactive, which can be detrimental to your general health.
  • People with back pain spend almost twice as much on healthcare expenses in their lifetime.
  • People with back pain are almost 5 times more likely to have psychological distress.
  • Some causes of back pain are simply unavoidable, like aging, trauma or disease. Themost common causes of back pain come from your lifestyle, like bad posture, obesity, smoking, muscle strains…etc.

Nearly 31 million people in the U.S. experience back pain every day!
Back Pain Prevention Tips:
  • Improve your posture. Align the back of your head, shoulders and butt when you stand, and keep feet shoulder-width apart.
  • Sleep better. Try to always keep your ears, shoulders, and hips aligned. Sleeping on your back, keep your head as flat as possible and place a pillow under your knees to help maintain the natural curve of your spine. If you have to sleep on your side, keep the pillow between your knees instead. As for the belly sleep position…BAD!
  • Avoid strains. When lifting heavy objects, squat and use your legs for support.  Hold the load close to your body and use your feet to make small changes in direction, not your waist (no bending, lifting and twisting). Keep your shoulders in line with your hips as you move.
  • Exercise. Try things like Yoga or Pilates to strengthen your core and increase flexibility. Exercise is one of your best defenses against back pain.
  • Get regular adjustments. Getting regularly adjusted by a chiropractor will help correct the misalignments in your spine that cause you pain. When your spine is correctly aligned, not only will your physical function improve, but your immune system has the capacity to work up to 200% stronger.

Know Step By Step Technique Of How To Correct Posture

Author: Jini Johnson

How to correct posture may be a major concern for those who are in desk jobs and have to sit for long hours every day. It is undeniable that improper sitting posture is well capable of giving us back pain especially if you sit for extended periods of time. This is the reason it is advised from the very childhood that we should sit erect with shoulders back & chest out; unfortunately, by the time we enter our adulthood, most of have completely forgotten about this advice from our elders.

In this discussion, we will see how our postures can be affected by several factors.

  1. Extra body weight plays a pivotal role in deciding our posture. If we are obese or overweight, it may very well lead to improper posture.
  2. If we sit on the chair slouched, we may end up with a bad body posture.
  3. If our seating arrangement is inapt and seats are not ergonomically designed, it may result in back pain and other back issues.
  4. Sometimes, poor standing habits can put an unnecessary pressure on our backbone, thereby distorting your posture.

Considering the aforementioned factors, it is safe to say that if we do not make a conscious effort for correcting body posture, we might end up facing problems such as back pain, headache, and pain in other parts of the body.

Following are some of the main reasons for ensuring correct body posture:

  1. It ensures better blood circulation
  2. It helps in proper breathing
  3. It enhances the health of the joints

Now, it is important to know how to correct postureand maintain it. Hence, a proper step by step technique needs to be followed to find and maintain proper posture:

  1. To begin with, we need to understand how to sit, stand and walk, maintaining correct posture. We should maintain the posture of sticking the chest out with shoulders back, while standing. Your palms should NOT face backwards if done correctly. While sitting, we should maintain an erect posture with head raised, chest out & shoulders back, instead of slouching. The key is to maintain the natural inward S-curve in the small of your back. Walking straight and thinking of an invisible string running vertically through the middle of your body pulling you up will help & keep your backbone erect to ensure proper posture.
  2. Going further, we can also use a mirror to examine the alignment of our ears, shoulders and hips and take corrective measures to ensure they are perfectly aligned.
  3. Third, when we breathe in through our nose and then our abdomen expands, then it ensures proper posture of our body. Correcting posture is not only mandatory for adults. We also need to cross-check proper posture for children, while they stand, sit and walk. As a matter of fact, ensuring perfect Posture for children is indispensably critical due to their tender age and growing bodies and will ensure a healthy back and proper posture for the future.

Bad Posture contributes to Lower Back Pain

Author: back pain

In the words of the wise MoriheiUeshiba, a famous martial artist and founder of the Japanese martial art of aikido, “A good stance and posture reflect a proper state of mind”. Humans communicate in a number of ways. Language is our primary means of communication however, that’s only one side of the coin. Equally important is our body language. The way we conduct ourselves around people and the way we hold ourselves as we go about our daily routine is all very important factors to consider for the sake of our well-being. Proper posture is crucial to ensure a healthy life. Generally it is very easy to misunderstand its importance or be oblivious to the harmful effects of bad posture. Neglect and ignorance of these issues can lead people to a life ofreoccurring back pain which forces them to resort to seeking various treatments and extensive back pain relief exercises.

One major cause of lower back pain is poor posture. In our everyday life we often have to spend a long time behinds desks. It is essential to examine the position of the computer screen, the type of chair being used as well as the possible need for footrests, back supports and telephone headsets, all of which, if incorrect, can contribute to poor posture and can directly cause lower back pain and muscle spasm affecting the neck.

Although people in offices spend more time sitting at a desk than the average person, they will be less susceptible to poor posture if they leave their desk at regular intervals. For example leaving to go to the rest room, attending meetings and taking coffee and lunch breaks. Furthermore, regular mobilizing and stretching exercises will help to prevent poor posture. People who surf the internet for long periods of time are more at risk of developing lower back pain as well as neck pain and muscle spasm due to bad posture. It is common to lose track of time while sitting in front of the computer screen and people easily settle in the hunched stance whereby they slouch or lean towards their screen with no support for the back. The spine develops a bend due to prolonged periods of time in this stance and the stress exerted on the lower back leads to back pain and fatigue in the muscles due to inactivity.

The other common mistake that is made by most people is the way they stand. It is common to ignore the posture when people are engaged in a conversation or when listening to someone speak at an event such as a meeting or a seminar. The optimal standing position is with the legs spread a comfortable distance apart with one foot slightly forward and the knees slightly bent. Gently shifting or the weight from one thigh to the other will take the pressure off the lower spine and thereby reduce or event prevents back pain. The weight of the entire body is evenly distributed on both thighs legs and not on the lower back #It is also important not to lean to one side of the body and locking the hip joint as this puts pressure on the hip joint and twists the spine Doing so can lead to unnecessary pressure on the back and hips as it tries to compensate for the stress on one side and can leads to slouching of the shoulders and neck strain.

The easiest way to prevent poor posture while standing sitting, bending and lifting is to learn what it is you are doing wrong while most people think they know how to stand, sit, bend, lift and carry out daily activities correctly, this is not true. Traditional methods do not work! In order to learn the correct methods to preventbad posture thereby learning to prevent lower back pain as well as neck pain yourself, find a specialist back pain therapist who can correctly tell us the right way lower back pain relief exercise your individual needs and devise a correct postural and exercise program for you.

What Are Some Effective Methods to Correct Bad Posture

Author: Sutapa Sarkar

“Bad posture is increasingly becoming a problem for more and more people today. One explanation for it may be the fact that so many people are hunched over computers all the time. They work in front of a computer, and they also spend leisure time in front of a computer as they visit social networking sites or play PC games. Bad computer posture can
lead to back pains, the most common effect of bad posture in general. To remedy the situation, one can make a conscious effort to sit straight when working at the computer, get the best office chair that promotes good posture, and if back pain is experienced, try out yoga, stretching and back pain exercises.

Below are more tips on how to have proper computer posture:

• Get an ergonomic chair with an adjustable backrest and firm padding. This is the best kind of computer office chair. The backrest should be snug against your back, and slightly curved in such a way as to adapt to the natural inward curve of your lumbar spine. Sit properly so that your back makes contact with the backrest. Do not sit with your legs crossed.

• If you are hunched over while working on your computer, try adjusting the level of the
monitor. In many cases, the monitor is placed too low. On the other hand, if it is too high, you will crane your neck, and that’s not good either. The ideal is to have the top of the monitor at eye level.

• Always make a conscious effort to check your sitting posture, and correct it if needed. It is easy to forget how you’re sitting when you are engrossed on something on the screen.

Aside from being conscious about having good computer posture, be conscious of your
posture too while standing, walking and sitting elsewhere. Whenever you sit down, pretend you are sitting on a “posture chair” where you should have your back straight. Make a mental note to correct yourself whenever you slouch. Bad posture is often due to the habit of how you carry yourself, and it will take a while before you can undo that habit. To unlearn it, replace it with the new habit of always checking your posture and adjusting it as needed.

How to improve posture requires that you know what good posture is. Good posture means standing with the spine straight, not rigidly so but more or less relaxed. Your shoulders should be rolled back, your two feet should be evenly planted on the floor, and your chin should be parallel to the floor. Your whole stance shouldn’t feel rigid or uncomfortable.

For people who already are experiencing back pain, conscious posture correction may not be enough. What they can do is to consult a physician, especially if the pain becomes severe. Your doctor can recommend exercises to correct your posture. Hopefully, he won’t have to recommend braces or even surgery, which is a last-resort option for serious back
problems and spinal abnormalities. If you are so inclined, you can also consult experts in alternative medicine. A chiropractor can relieve your back pain as well as teach you good posture exercises. A yoga instructor can teach you the specific postures of yoga for back pain.

Good posture tips also include having a firm mattress to sleep on at night. People spend hours asleep, and when they frequently do so in an awkward posture because of a mattress that’s too soft, it can defeat all their daytime efforts to maintain good posture.”

What Is A Subluxation?

Author: diaz red

While there is much debate within the chiropractic profession as to the effects of subluxations, the majority of the profession does agree to what a subluxation actually is.

The definition of a subluxation is: an incorrect movement or a position of bones within  the spine, resulting in abnormal and detrimental nerve pressure. A mechanical strain that results in wear and tear of other spinal muscles ligaments take place due to improper functioning of a vertebra. The other subsequent painful conditions caused due to subluxation are severe pain, tenderness of muscles, decreased mobility of spine, numbness in the extremities and inflammation. These all abnormal conditions are sufficient reasons that might require you to visit a doctor or a Chiropractor.

Subluxation can cause adverse effects to the functioning of nerves and may also result in the decreased communication within the nervous system; thanks to the direct relationship between the nerve roots and spine. This is why it is very important to eliminate subluxations in order to avoid its negative impacts on overall health.

Causes of Subluxation

Primarily subluxations occur due to the following reasons:

Physical Causes
These causes are responsible for causing acute trauma that hinder repetitive motion and affect the spine badly. These physical causes might even be the physical positions we are accustomed to and have never thought about. They may include accidents, incorrect postures, wrong sitting position, and lack of ergonomics, improper lifting, repetitive motions and workstation habits.

Emotional Causes
They are generally the conditions of stress due to extreme emotional conditions. It generally includes overwhelming emotions like stress, anger, sadness and fear. Excessive emotional conditions and lack of stress management have significant effect on the functioning of the immune system of body that also result in several kinds of physical problems including subluxation.

Chemical Causes
These are the causes that involve effect of chemical intake of our body. Generally the chemical intake refers to diet, nutritional components, drugs, pollution, smoking, alcohol or chemical toxic agents present in food , air or water. Many chemicals that are not good for human body are likely to decrease immunity of body and reduce capability of body to tolerate stress of any kind. This might eventually result in spinal subluxation.

Treatment for Subluxation
Sometimes subluxation can be cured by virtue of natural abilities of human body to fight abnormalities. Human body has the natural tendency to resist all the negativities that are troubling. However, a severe subluxation may not be cured automatically and the patient may need to visit a chiropractor.

A chiropractor treats the patients of subluxation by locating the proper spinal vertebra by making certain adjustment. These adjustments are made quickly but with gentle and corrective force. This corrective force allows the immovable or incorrectly moving spinal joints to attain a normal motion. This simply depend on the chiropractor’s decision which method of applying corrective force should be used for the treatment of subluxation. Many times more than one adjustment is required for a complete treatment for subluxation.

Chiropractors are the only health care profession that concentrates on locating and correct spinal subluxations. The reason chiropractic treatment gets such positive results is the chiropractors ability to correct these subluxations and restore proper function to the spine.

How Chiropractic Can Improve Weak Immune System

Author: JacksonneniJohn

Have you tried chiropractic medicine lately? Many people claim that chiropractic is all a pile of mumbo jumbo but many also swear by it. Many have felt its effect and have found that it has improved their overall well-being. Research has finally pushed these claims aside to set things right to see how chiropractic is affecting us.

Chiropractic is a health care profession that aims to correct vertebral subluxations. These are deviations in the correct alignment of the spine. Misalignment of the spine generally creates disturbances in the body. When a bone in your spine is not in its correct place, tendency is it compresses some of the nerves in your spinal cord. This disturbs the normal functioning of your body as your brain and your body is not able to communicate effectively.

Now what does this have to do with our immune system? Remember that in biology class, our own body has its immune system. It is a system of cells and other defenses that protect us from viruses and bacteria, which have plans on disrupting our bodily functions. Remember too that our brain is the central command center of our body. Everything is controlled by the brain and it communicates via our nerves, which are directly connected to our brain via the spinal cord. The spinal cord is actually protected by a column of bones called the spine or vertebra. What chiropractic stresses is that, if this column of bones is not in perfect alignment, they disrupt your spinal cord. Disrupting the spinal cord means disrupting the signals that come from the brain, effectively not putting our immune system at 100%.

To support the assumptions of chiropractic, here are some published researches. According to a 1993 study published in the Chiropractic Journal of Australia, chiropractic may influence T and B lymphocyte numbers, NK cell numbers, antibody levels, phagocytic activity, and plasma beta-endorphin levels. In plain English, chiropractic may increase your white blood cell count, the cells in your body that fend off infection.

Another study in 1991 and 1992 published in the Journal of Manipulative Physiologic Therapy concludes that there is an increased cell count of neutrophils after chiropractic treatment. This is a type of white blood cell forming the majority of your initial response team to infection.

A more recent study in 2011 published in Dynamic Chiropractic by Dr. Malik Slosberg, D.C., M.S. states that there is increasing evidence that chiropractic manipulation decreases production of chemicals that promote inflammation in the body.

Although true that chiropractic needs more study and research, there is undoubtedly strong evidence that chiropractic helps the immune system in some way. The mechanism of action as to how this happens may not yet be fully explained but because of advances in medicine, research in chiropractic may reveal in the future how it actually improves a weak immune system. It is only a matter of time, wherein chiropractic becomes as popular as mainstream medicine. Furthermore, has a possibility of becoming the alternative treatment of choice for diseases. For more visit www.scartonchiropractic.com
