The CROSSFIT system: Friend or Foe?

There are more than 3,000 CrossFit affiliated gyms worldwide, with 332 in California alone.

So why is this new workout system so popular? In the simplest of terms, CrossFit can be defined as a strength and conditioning system that is designed to promote both broad and targeted physical fitness. And it does yield results.

Results are good. We can agree on that. But what if the results come at a cost? 

The emphasis of the CrossFit training system is on speed and total weight being lifted – the emphasis is not on technique.  Most of the workouts are time-based, meaning you don’t stop until the clock hits zero. Even as your muscles fail and your mind weakens, coaches and fellow gym goers push each other to completion. It is meant to be brutal and demanding.

Despite the results that many have seen, there are still many exercise experts that are troubled by many “fad” aspects within the system – particularly the lack of guidance for beginners.

It’s extremely easy for an individual new to exercise to dive headlong into stressful workouts, and the results can be harmful.  Any individual involved in medicine and exercise knows that an unskilled person cannot participate in this system without injuring themselves.

Experts believe there is a clear lack of direction, training and understand for new athletes or others who are new to the CrossFit system. With the CrossFit system, Information is lacking, which only makes it easier for new members to perform inappropriate exercises. But even fit people who work out regularly can be at risk. Anyone who exercises strenuously at too rapid of a pace risks temporary or even permanent injury.

The risk is clear. Exercises of this intensity without form have a much higher potential for injury.

Besides the obvious risks to the joints and the back, there are other serious risks involved with this kind of intense workout. Rhabdomyolysis is a kidney condition most commonly induced by excessive exercise. The potentially life-threatening state occurs when muscles break down and myoglobin, the biproduct of muscle fibers, is released into the blood stream, essentially clogging up the kidneys and poisoning them.
While all exercise can create injury, there are more injuries with CrossFit because of the high-speed, high-impact approach. Certain exercises implemented by CrossFit are meant to be done in moderation. But CrossFit preaches pushing to the edge of every set, every rep, until there’s nothing left in the tank. Although Crossfit has become so popular for a reason, results, one thing is certain: Regularly pushing your body to failure can lead to serious health risks, like Rhabdomyolysis.

So make sure you weigh the risks.  Pushing your body to become healthy is great! But push too hard and you may just break instead. Make sure to find a program that is right for you and your skill level. Be safe and exercise smart!

The Migraine Mystery

The pain of a migraine can be so searing that you might as well just drill a hole through you head. Then again, when evil spirits were thought to be the cause of these terrible pains (some 3,000 years ago) this may have actually been the “remedy” of choice. While modern medicine has changed and developed quite dramatically, some things have not. The mystery remains: What is the cause of these horrible headaches and how can we make them go away?
While some theorize that migraines are the result of a chemical imbalance or hormonal change, others suggest that they are the result of the foods that you eat or from a change in the weather.  While there is no solid explanation for why migraines occur, there are still plenty of drugs designed to combat their effects.

Things You Should Care About

 

 

 

 

Earlier this week  we showed you a list of things not worth caring about. Here’s s small list of things that are.

1. Keeping in touch with friends when one or both of you move away, even if that means reserving time to talk to them even when it isn’t convenient.

2. Listening to someone when they’re going through a breakup and need someone to vent to.

3. Paying attention to what your body needs in terms of nutrition and exercise, and not denying it things or overloading it with unhealthy stuff.

4. Forgiving yourself for making mistakes when it comes to your health and not falling victim to the “Oh, well, I ate badly today — may as well give up forever” line of thought when it comes to getting healthy.

5. Having good access to reproductive health and sex education for everyone.

6. Keeping a home environment that is at least reasonably clean/organized, and which promotes productivity — or at least doesn’t make you feel like a disgusting bridge troll every time you open the door.

7. Being surrounded by people who make you feel good about yourself, and don’t shame or judge you for who you are.

8. Being a good host to people who come and stay with you. (There is nothing worse than being made to feel like you are inconveniencing someone whose home you are staying at.)

9. Dressing in a way that makes you feel attractive and comfortable, even if other people may think of it as tacky or bizzare. If you want to dress up like you’re perpetually on your way to an anime convention, you do you, weeb.

10. Living in a neighborhood that is conducive to your lifestyle and in which you feel safe — even if it’s a little bit less centrally-located than you would have liked.

11. Saying an actual “Happy Birthday” to people whom you care about, instead of just scribbling it on their Facebook wall with a million other acquaintances.

12. Staying within your budget each month, even if that means forgoing something you really want until later in the year (or saying no to social events that you’d like to attend).

13. Having friends who are understanding about your need to stay in sometimes for budget reasons, and don’t make you feel guilty or lame for it.

14. Dating someone who is proud to introduce you to their friends and family (and whose friends and family treat you with respect and kindness).

15. Responding to people who text you as promptly as you can, within reason. No one likes to be left hanging on a “what’s up” for three hours.

16. Being on time for meeting people — because nothing says “My world is more important than yours” than being perpetually tardy. We’ve all got things to do, be on time.

4. What the people you don’t like post on their Facebook status (why are you even still friends with them?).

5. Getting/maintaining a tan.

6. Which celebrity’s breasts are exposed this week.

7. Which celebrity is cheating on which other celebrity.

8. The opinions of people who a) will never like you and b) have absolutely no bearing on your life.

9. Whether or not you look as good as some random, well-dressed stranger on the subway.

10. Who is making more money than you, or how much exactly you think that they are making.

11. The fact that you are perceived as not as sexually appealing as a picture of a celebrity or model that has been put through so many rounds of makeup and Photoshop as to be rendered little more than a cartoon.

12. Reality television stars, how much sex they are having (and with whom), and whether or not they decide to start a family.

13. Whether people you know are getting married, having children, or making big life changes when it either hasn’t happened to you yet or you don’t want it to happen at all.

14. The social lives of people who don’t invite you out places.

15. What negative thing a critic has to say about a film you really enjoyed.

16. The fact that friends are going to make harmless decisions that we wouldn’t necessarily make for ourselves. (They are there for your love and companionship, not to have another parent.)

Your Amazing Body

Your Body is a MIRACLE.

It is nothing short of amazing, but sometimes we forget, are misled, or sometimes we can get caught up in the trials and tribulations of life and lose sight of or even question this.

But if you really stop and think about it, you will be amazed at how everything works so well.  Did you know that you pump 2,000 gallons of blood through your body every single day and usually don’t think about a drop? You breathe 20,000 times every day and do not think about it once.  We all go through amazing changes in our bodies from birth to adult, everyone goes through puberty at roughly the same time, and all of this happens without any oversight, no meds, nothing – it just happens.  And we don’t question it.  Our bodies are so smart that even slightly before we start exercising, our blood pressure goes up; and if we get a cut on our finger, it heals.  HOW AMAZING IS THAT?!  On a normal day, you don’t think about even one of the trillions of chemical reactions that take place in your body every single second of every single minute of every single hour of every single day of every single year of every single lifetime… Just stop and think about that and how incredible your body and this life is.

You see, you are intelligent, you are amazing, you carry inside of you an intelligence that runs your body and all of those trillions of reactions discussed above.  Chiropractors call this intelligence “Innate Intelligence.”  It is Innate because it is inborn – you don’t have to learn how to use it – it was there from the second the sperm and egg that miraculously created you met, and actually even before that (somehow, the sperm knew to go toward the egg).  That intelligence is carried through your nervous system, which in coordination with your endocrine system is the master regulator/communicator in your body.  Your brain, spinal cord, nerve roots, and peripheral nerves make up your nervous system, and that is the big cheese, the CEO, the General, el Jefe.  All information about what is happening in the body is sent to the brain through the spinal cord, and that information is used to properly run your body.

The spine and skull are designed to support and protect your nervous system, while giving shape to your body.  A solid tube of bone would have been the safest way to protect our nerve system, but that wouldn’t have been conducive to movement or life, so we have joints.  Made of much softer tissue, these joints are the inherently the weak spots in the skeletal system.  So, if a spinal bone gets jarred from its healthy position (through acute or sustained postural trauma), it causes damage to the joints of the spine.  Damage to these joints irritates the nerve system, decreasing your body’s ability to communicate within or to itself, which blocks or disrupts Innate Intelligence. Chiropractic is so simple, it is brilliant.  Chiropractic understands that the body is brilliant, and works with it through specific chiropractic adjustments on specifically damaged joints to return proper function to the spine, as well as to remove the irritation to the nervous system, unblocking your body’s life force.

This is why chiropractors do not claim to treat any specific disease, but get tremendous results with many.  We restore proper communication to the body, helping the body to be healthier, and HEALTHY BODIES HAVE FEWER SYMPTOMS.

Symptoms are signals telling us that there is something wrong that needs our attention.  Not alarms to be turned off with medications that dampen alarms.  You get hungry and thirsty because you are getting low on fuel and water that is essential to run your body.  What if there was a medication you could take when you felt hungry or thirsty, so you wouldn’t have to be bothered with eating or drinking?  How long do you think that would work?  It is the same thing with other symptoms! A headache, sciatic pain, breathing problems, poor digestion,etc., are not just bothersome symptoms that need to be quieted with medication – they are telling you that something is wrong and needs to be dealt with by finding the cause – not just by eliminating the symptom.
